2009 Jeep Liberty 42RLE
Complaint: Moaning noise shifting into 2nd gear, no drivability issues
Cause: Front planetary captured bearing failure.
Correction: Replace the front planetary and sun gear
Year Make and Model of the Vehicle: 2009 Jeep Liberty
Transmission: 42RLE
Additional Notes: The transmission did not have any drivability issues while shifting, only made noise. When the transmission pan was removed it had metal shavings. When disassembled the front planet captured bearing was damaged and damage to the sun gear that rides on the bearing. The bearing is captured in the planetary and is only replaced with the planetary. Also, either the cooler will need to be flushed or replaced.
